Sage Youth - Volunteers

Letter Our volunteer tutors and mentors are an invaluable asset to our organization. Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with their students. Not only do our volunteers give their students the gift of literacy, they also provide them with the wonderful benefits of friendship and support.

Letter Teaching is an instinctual gift that we facilitate by creating pre-prepared study units for each of the children geared to their specific needs. Volunteering provides our tutors with experience in the areas of education, social work, psychology, sociology, and most of all, community service.

Letter If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor, please contact our office.

Sage Youth programs run from September to June. We recruit from August to May. Our straightforward and brief trainings are done one-on-one and in small groups. We require a police check and reference checks on every volunteer. Volunteers cannot begin tutoring until both of these requirements have been completed.

To obtain a police check, you can visit your local police department, provide them with the necessary identification and pay the required fee (please keep the receipt, we would be happy to reimburse you for the cost). Generally speaking, the completed police check will be returned to you while you wait or it can be mailed to you within a few days.

Alternatively, we can run the police check for you. Should you choose this option, please keep in mind that you cannot begin volunteering with us until the check is complete. This process can take several weeks. To run a police check, we need photocopies of two pieces of ID (please see list below). Please photocopy both sides of the ID if there is a signature on the back (ex. Driver's Licence). To run the reference check, we need two professional and one personal reference. Please bring the photocopies of ID and the reference information to the training that you book with a Sage Youth staff person.

A paid coordinator is always on site supervising the classroom. This coordinator is a resource for you and the students. Please ask any questions and check in about the successes and challenges your students are experiencing.
